Windows systems engineer — Belgium

Tim Van Engeland

I keep Windows networks running: identity, mail, endpoints, and the plumbing underneath that nobody notices until it breaks. Servers from 2008 to 2025, Active Directory, Exchange, Intune — the full estate.

After hours that same instinct turns into a rack at home — Proxmox and Home Assistant — and a long-running weakness for the trance and melodic house that filled Illusion.

Things I run and build

The stuff that runs at home — half hobby, half proving ground for ideas I'd rather not test at work first.

  1. Proxmox

    The rack at home

A Proxmox host carrying the VMs and containers the house depends on — Home Assistant, storage, backups — with snapshots so a bad change is a two-minute rollback, not an evening.

    • Proxmox VE
    • LXC
    • Backups
  2. Tool

    Home Assistant Update Manager

A small utility that keeps a Home Assistant install, its add-ons and HACS integrations current — see what's pending, apply updates on my terms, and roll back cleanly when a release misbehaves.

    • C#
    • WPF
    • Supervisor API
  3. Automation

    The house that listens

Years of Home Assistant automations, dashboards and Zigbee button logic — lighting scenes tuned so a room can drop into "after midnight" with a single press.

    • YAML
    • Jinja
    • Zigbee2MQTT
  4. Scripts

    PowerShell utilities

Small tools for the unglamorous jobs: backups, bulk file surgery, and installers that behave identically on every machine they touch.

    • PowerShell
    • WinForms

Sounds

Sounds like home

My ear was trained on the dancefloor at Illusion — the Belgian club that ran on melodic house, uplifting trance, and the hard-trance anthems that still set my definition of euphoric.

A long build, a breakdown that takes its time, and a drop the whole room has been waiting for. The retro anthems got played to death and earned every spin — I still measure a night out against them.

About

Who's typing

I'm Tim, a Windows systems engineer based in Belgium. My day is the unglamorous plumbing of a network that has to just work — domain, mail, endpoints, and the quiet maintenance that keeps all three boring.

The same instinct follows me home, where a Proxmox host and a pile of Home Assistant YAML keep the house running. Off the clock I'm usually rebuilding an old Illusion set track by track, and defending the honour of a club that shaped how a generation heard trance.
